Before the Beautiful Room — What Design Actually Begins With
Most people assume design begins with a room.
It doesn’t.
It begins with a conversation that has nothing to do with furniture, finishes, or floor plans. It begins with a question: what do you want to feel when you walk through your door?
That question is the foundation of every project I take on — including the one that recently appeared on American Dream TV on HGTV.
Before I look at a single surface, I listen. I learn how someone actually lives — not the life they think they should be living, but the one that happens behind closed doors on an ordinary Tuesday. Where they retreat when they need quiet. What the space is currently failing to give them. What they have stopped seeing because they have learned to live around it.
Then I visit the space itself. I read it the way a room actually speaks — in proportion, in light, in the transitions between rooms that either prepare you or interrupt you.
Then comes the edit. Not addition. The discipline of removing everything that is working against the space so what remains finally has room to be itself.
That is where the beautiful room comes from.
Not from a trend. Not from a catalog. From understanding a person completely enough that their home could only ever belong to them.
